Survival

One of the main themes of the novel The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is survival.

Firstly, the theme of survival relates to Katniss’s daily life in District 12. Because of the poor conditions in the district, people rarely have enough to eat: “Starvation is not an uncommon fate in District 12” (Chapter 2, 53%).

After she loses her father in a mining accident and her mother becomes depressed and unable to take care of Katniss and her younger sister Prim, Katniss has to step up and find a way for them to survive. This eventually leads her to start illegally foraging and hunting in the Meadow outside of District 12. Katniss continues doing this for years which allows her to get food for herself and her family.

Survival in District 12 also comes in other forms....
