Chapter summaries Part 2: The Games

Chapter 10

The second part of the novel The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins begins with the crowd going wild over Peeta’s declaration of love for Katniss. Peeta steals the show. Katniss, however, is stunned. When the interviews are over, she shoves Peeta, making him cut his hands, and yells at him for making her look weak. The mentors and stylists, however, tell Katniss that Peeta has made her look desirable and he has given her an advantage. Katniss apologizes to him.

Everyone says their goodbyes as the Games start the following day. Haymitch offers a last piece of advice and tells them they should run away from the other tributes as soon as the Games begin as they are not prepared for the bloodbath that will take place at the start.

That night, Katniss cannot sleep and goes to the roof, where she finds Peeta. He tells her that he wishes to die as himself and not become a puppet for the Capitol and expresses his belief that Katniss can win the Games.

The next morning, Katniss is taken to the arena in a hovercraft. Cinna dresses her in the suit all the tributes will be wearing, and pins Katniss’s mockingjay pin on it. He reminds her of Haymitch’s advice to run and find water, and tells her he would bet on her winning the Games. Katniss is raised into the arena.

The gong strikes and, undecided, Katniss grabs a backpack of supplies and runs away. A tribute throws a knife at her but Katniss dodges and the knife sticks into her backpack. She runs , trying to get away as quickly as possible.
