Class inequality

The differences between the lives of the people from the poor districts and those from the wealthy Capitol highlight the theme of oppression and inequality in the novel The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. 

Panem has very extreme class divisions and this is most clear in the way Katniss, a girl from the poorest district in Panem, sees life in the Capitol, the wealthiest and most luxurious place in the country. This is especially noticeable when it comes to food: 

What must it be like, I wonder, to live in a world where food appears at the press of a button? How would I spend the hours I now commit to combing the woods for sustenance if it were so easy to come by? (Chapter 5, 36%)
