Uncle Carlos

Uncle Carlos is Lisa’s brother and Starr’s uncle in The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. Starr views Carlos as a father figure because he filled this role during the years when her real father Maverick served time in prison. However, this also means that Maverick and Carlos often come in conflict with each other. They often disagree about what is best for Starr, and Maverick still feels bad about missing so much of Starr’s childhood. 

The conflicts between Carlos and Maverick also sometimes relate to Maverick’s criminal background. For example, they disagree strongly about whether it is a good idea to call in gang members to protect Starr when she is under threat, instead of contacting the police.
