Hailey

At the beginning of The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, Hailey is one of Starr’s best friends at school. Like Chris, she is white and wealthy. However, unlike Chris, she is unwilling to recognize her white privilege or her racial bias. She is also unwilling to admit mistakes or learn. When Starr suggests Hailey’s comment about fried chicken was racist, Hailey is immediately defensive: “After everything we've been through, you think I’m a racist? Really?” (Chapter 7, 46%)
