Seven Carter

Seven is Starr’s older half-brother in The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. He has a very complicated family situation, because he is the result of a single sexual act between Maverick and Iesha, King’s partner, who was working as a prostitute at the time. This means that Seven is Starr and Sekani’s half-brother, but also Kenya and Lyric’s half-brother. 

Seven feels torn between his two different homes because of his very different families. On the one hand, the Carter household offers love, safety, and stability, meaning that he is happiest at their place. On the other hand, he also feels responsible for protecting his mother and his younger siblings from King’s violent rages, so he is not prepared to leave them entirely.
