Lies

The novel The Giver by Lois Lowry presents the community’s interesting and problematic attitude towards telling lies. Officially, it is forbidden for the citizens of the community to lie. Jonas is therefore surprised when he receives his new rules, which now apply to him as the new Receiver of Memory. 

Jonas is now allowed to lie (Chapter 9, 57%). This shatters Jonas's images of the community that only tells the truth: "What if others—adults—had, upon becoming Twelves, received in their instructions the same terrifying sentence? What if they had all been instructed: You may lie?" (Chapter 9, 100%).

After that, Jonas has a hard time trusting his parents: "[...] —he could, conceivably (though it was almost unimaginable), ask someone, some adult, his father perhaps: 'Do you lie?' But he would have no...
