Shakespeare’s play is based on other sources

Romeo and Juliet is hailed as a masterpiece of English literature, but Shakespeare actually borrowed heavily from older texts. The story about two young lovers cursed by fate is based on an Italian tale, which was later rewritten by various authors. Eventually, the story was translated into English where it was again rewritten. It is believed that Shakespeare relied on these English versions of the story for his main characters and main plot but added several minor characters and subplots.
