Prologue
The prologue uses foreshadowing by revealing the ending to us
Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet opens with a prologue, which is the first of two in the play. A prologue is a short speech addressed to the audience. It is typically delivered by a group of actors or a single actor, and the aim of the prologue is to set the scene and introduce the play to the audience.
The prologue in Romeo and Juliet consists of fourteen lines. We are first informed that the story takes place in Verona, Italy. In Shakespeare’s day, Italians were considered very passionate which underlines the love story. We are then told that this is a story of two feuding families whose children are destined to fall in love, die tragically, and unite their families.
