Soliloquy and aside

Since there is no narrator in a play, two dramatic techniques - soliloquy and aside - are used to show the characters’ thoughts and feelings.

Soliloquy

A soliloquy is a lengthy speech that is typically spoken when the character is alone on stage. One example is Juliet‘s soliloquy in Act 3, Scene 2 when she is alone in the family orchard. In her soliloquy, she speaks of her coming wedding night with Romeo. As she is sexually inexperienced, she is nervous, but she is also eager for the night to come. The last lines of the soliloquy focus on her impatience and read:

O, I have bought the mansion of a love,
But not possessed it, and, though I am sold,
Not yet enjoyed. So tedious is this day
As is the night before some festival
To an impatient child that hath new robes
And may n...
