Sound

Sound is relevant for setting the mood of the film and emphasising key movements. The music used in the film helps set the atmosphere and at times reflects the main character’s emotions or struggles.

The short film contains a variety of diegetic sounds (sounds that naturally belong in a scene). In the opening shot (00:05-00:20), the sound reflects the normal noises that can be heard on a busy street: the sound of tires, cars honking, indistinctive chatter, etc. These sounds imitate a natural setting, drawing the audience into the world of the film. The sounds also suggest the overwhelming noise of a city, showing how a city is a place where people can get lost or be overlooked.

Non-diegetic sounds (sounds that do not belong naturally in a scene) are included in the form of music, which helps create an emotional impact on the viewer. A soft piano tune (00:22-00:40) composed by Ryan King plays as Stephen tries to distribute flyers. The melancholic tone of the music reflects Stephen’s frustrated efforts and hopelessness in his current situation. This music reoccurs at key moments of the film, varying in intensity. The music is generally lounder in Stephen’s private moments (01:23-01:27), suggesting the overwhelming sense of sadness that he feels....
