Social setting
The social setting of the short film “I Don’t Make the Rules” by Law Chen revolves around the contemporary problems of American society.
The short film suggests that, because of a knee injury, Stephen most likely had to give up his pursuit of a career as a professional football player. As a result, it has been hard for him to seek new employment. Besides his physical injury, Stephen might also find it difficult to find a job due to his lack of education, and at the same time he has to deal with expensive medical bills.
Stephen dropped out of college and was unable to complete his Bachelor’s degree. Moreover, higher education in the US is very expensive and the film hints that Stephen may have had trouble paying for his education. Consequently, the movie shows the difficulties of former football players after they can no longer play, especially when they focus on their career and neglect their education. However, Stephen tries to get back on his feet by educating himself. The books in his house (05:50) suggest that he studied law independently, therefore showing that it is possible to find a new path in life.
