Physical setting

The story takes place in the US, as suggested by the references to the NBA and the WNBA. The most important locations are the high school’s indoor basketball court, where we can see AJ playing, and the locker room. AJ is also shown practicing on an outside basketball court, with city lights behind her. On the indoor basketball court, there are many scenes which show viewers that AJ is a good basketball player, who is able to surpass some of her teammates with her techniques. 

This setting is contrasted with the quieter setting on the outdoors court, where AJ practices by herself late at night. This setting can be interpreted in two ways. On the one hand, it is clearly a place where AJ can focus on her dream, without having to hide her gender from her teammates and coaches. On the other hand, the darkness and the fact t...
