Ambition

A theme explored in the film “Game” by Jeannie Donohoe is ambition. AJ is determined to play for the best team and, therefore, decides to deceive her coach, her potential teammates, and her father to be able to have a chance to pursue her dream.

AJ’s ambition is noticeable in several moments in the film. She pushes herself through her training and does not complain when it gets difficult. Furthermore, when one of the boys begins to provoke her and even gets physically aggressive with her, she does not respond. This shows that she wants to focus on playing and probably does not want to attract attention to herself and be found out. Implicitly, this shows her intense focus on being picked for the team and achieving success. We also witness AJ training alone, which further shows how determined she is to get on the team.

AJ’s ambition is further highlighted by her disregard for the rules and the consequences of being found out. She ignores the expectation that she should apply for the girls’ team and does not seem to worry about getting into trouble at school because of her deception.
