Structure

The short story “Champagne Flight” by Jill Norris begins with a short introduction in which the narrator provides some background information about her family and the reason behind her first air flight (p. 14, ll. 1-10). The narrator’s confession that she was always trying to look older than 16 (p. 14, l.1) foreshadows her obsession with appearing grown up and how she tries to pretend she is an adult during her flight. 

There are also several elements which foreshadow that Serena is not who the narrator thinks she is and that she is unhappy with her identity. One such element is her reaction when the narrator asks if she is an actress: “The look on her face seemed to harden. ‘I’m in show business’, she said flatly.” (p. 16, ll. 11-12).
