Style of language

The story “Champagne Flight” by Jill Norris is written in an informal style. The narration uses contractions, and the tone is casual and conversational. For instance: “Imagine being offered wine! I knew I shouldn’t have done it, but then who was to know?... and one small glass of wine wouldn’t hurt” (p. 15, ll. 17-18). This gives the impression that the narrator is addressing the readers directly.

The narrator uses exclamation points to express her thoughts. For example: “I felt definitely grown up!” (p. 15, ll. 5-6). The use of exclamation points expresses the narrator’s childish enthusiasm and her excitement about experiencing new things.
