Outer characterization
The main character in the short story “Champagne Flight” by Jill Norris is the unnamed narrator. She is a 16- year- old girl. Her father is in the armed forces and gets stationed in Washington, and the narrator’s mother goes with him (p. 14, ll. 1-6). The narrator moves with her neighbors to finish her school term and then takes a flight to join her family (p. 14, ll. 7-11).
During the flight, the narrator is wearing a suit made of “a grey, pleated skirt and a boxy jacket” (p. 15, l. 6). She wears her hair brushed back from her face because she was told it makes her look older (p. 15, ll. 4-5). We do not learn her name, but Serena tells her it is a nice name, and she “could go on stage with a name like that” (p. 16, l. 6).
