Characters

The main characters in the short story “Champagne Flight” by Jill Norris are the narrator and Serena Sinclair.

The narrator is a 16-year-old girl who is on her first air flight. Throughout the story, the narrator’s thoughts and attitude show that, despite her wish to be older, she is actually immature. Both the narrator and Serena pretend to be something they are not, because they are not happy with their current lives. While the narrator wants to appear older and responsible, Serena wants to appear young and carefree. The meeting with Serena and the discovery of who she really is gives the narrator a new insight into what it means to grow old. After meeting Serena, the narrator no longer wants to pretend she is older.
