Pathos
The dominant form of appeal in Ruiz’s article is pathos. Through her stories, Ruiz constantly appeals to readers’ emotions to encourage readers to have a desired emotional response to her views. Here are a few relevant examples.
In the beginning, Ruiz talks about her feelings after the Brexit referendum results: “It’s a strange thing to wake up one morning and suddenly feel unwelcome in the country you’ve called home for 25 years” (ll. 1-2). The writer uses the feeling of being rejected to get readers to empathise with her and to be open to her perspective on the events.
Another example is: “To witness the bigotry of some Brexit voters has been confusing and upsetting. And, for me, it has hit very close to home” (ll. 78-79). Ruiz uses negative feelings to stir a similar sense of outrage in readers and encourage them to reject prejudice.
