Style of writing
Note that this stylistic analysis will focus on lines 103-120, as this is the focus in the exam task from STX English A on May 27, 2019. These lines correspond to the final two paragraphs of the article.
Lines 103-112 contains both formal and informal stylistic elements. Since the text describes a bureaucratic process, it contains a number of formal and technical expressions, such as "residency application form" (l. 103) and "government policy" (l. 110). There is also a quite complex sentence in the passive voice early on (ll. 103-105), which is another formal aspect. However, the section also contains informal elements, such as very short sentences like "I despair" (l. 105) and "The answer is none" (l. 111). It even contains incomplete sentences such as "Really?" (l. 110) and "Silence" (l. 110).
Lines 113-120 are more formal. We especially see this reflected in the choice of words, where many fairly advanced terms are used, such as "profoundly" (l. 115) and "diminished" (l. 120). The sentences are al...
