Peter’s mother

Peter’s mother is another secondary character in the story “Eastmouth” by Alison Moore. We are not given any specific details on her outer characterisation. However, her comments on Sonia’s colourful jacket suggest that she dresses conservatively: “Taking Sonia's jacket, looking at its bright colours, she says to Sonia, ‘Blue and green should never be seen!’ and then she puts the jacket away” (ll. 31-32). She then lends Sonia one of her own jackets, which is beige (l. 98).

The mother’s inner characterisation is constructed through her language and actions, as well as the narrator’s observations.

At first, the mother seems very welcoming, as she happily greets Sonia when she arrives: “His mother comes into the hallway with her arms wide open, saying to Sonia as much as to Peter, ‘You're home!...
