Title

The title of the short story “Eastmouth” by Alison Moore does not initially reveal much about the plot or the characters. However, we soon learn that "Eastmouth" is the name of a fictional seaside village in England.

The story begins by describing where Sonia is and what she thinks about the place: “Sonia stands on the slabs of the promenade, looking out across the pebbly beach. It is like so many of the seaside resorts from her childhood. (…) The visibility is poor. She can’t see land beyond Eastmouth.” (ll. 1-6).

The story revolves around Sonia’s and her boyfriend Peter’s visit to Eastmouth, where she meets Peter’s parents. Both Peter and his parents are very fond of Eastmouth and it is strongly suggested that they believe Sonia belongs there as well. At the end of the story, a woman in a transparent raincoat calls Sonia by Peter’s last name (ll. 183-187), a mistake that is also made at the restaurant where Sonia and Peter have their dinner (l. 123). Over the course of the story, more and more people believe that Sonia belongs to the town and to Peter’s family, and they also seem to be trying to convince Sonia that this is the case.
