Summary

The short story “Eastmouth” by Alison Moore describes a visit that Sonia and Peter pay to Peter’s parents in Eastmouth. The place reminds Sonia of the seaside resorts she used to go to as a child. Peter missed the sounds of the seagulls, although he often visited his parents while at university. On the way to Peter’s house, Sonia notices a woman in a transparent coat and how quiet the whole place is. Peter is thrilled that nothing changes in Eastmouth.

Once they reach Peter’s, his mother takes Sonia’s jacket and comments on its colours. At dinner, Peter’s parents ask Sonia about her plans for the summer. She tells them that she has applied for a job and that she intends to visit Las Vegas. She also tells them that the company will call there the next day if she gets the job.
