Sonia

Sonia is the protagonist of Alison Moore's short story “Eastmouth”. Also note that the narrator describes the events from her point of view. Sonia’s outer characterisation is brief – she comes from the Midlands of England and is used to city life (ll. 8-10). She is dressed in a brightly coloured jacket (ll. 11-12), which suggests that she has a non-conformist personality. She studied at university (l. 9) with Peter, suggesting that Sonia is most likely in her 20s.

Sonia’s inner characterisation is created through her language and actions, as well as through the narrator’s words, which convey Sonia’s perspective.

Several details in the story suggest Sonia’s non-conformist personality. Although she is at an age where many young people settle down, Sonia wants to work so that she can travel, specifically to Las Vegas (ll. 37-38). She has a suitcase with a sticker that says “I love Las Vegas” (l. 65), suggesting that this is her dream destination.
