Genre and literary period

"Eastmouth" comes from an anthology of horror stories, which may seem a little strange at first glance, as the story lacks many traditional horror elements. There are no monsters or serial killers, just a girl visiting her boyfriend's parents in a small seaside town. Instead, the horror is conveyed in more subtle ways, as the story gradually builds a sense of the protagonist being helplessly trapped, while the people she meets go to increasingly dramatic lengths to prevent her from leaving and from living out her dreams.

In this way, the horror draws upon a familiar fear that many readers will have experienced - the fear of being forced to settle down, the fear of being drawn away from the life one wants in favour of the life one's surroundings expect or demand.
