Peter

Peter Webster is a secondary character in “Eastmouth” by Alison Moore and Sonia’s boyfriend. His outer characterisation is very brief: he is from Eastmouth and has studied at university (l. 9). He also aspires to a management position at Eastmouth’s pavilion (ll. 144-145).

Peter’s inner characterisation is constructed through his language and actions, as well as through the narrator’s observations.

First, we learn that Peter has visited his parents extremely often during university (l. 9). Moreover, he keeps the key of his parents’ house on “a chain around his neck” (l. 29), and his suitcase tag is marked with this parents’ address (ll. 65-67). These details indicate that Peter is very close to his parents and that he is still emotionally dependent on them and the comfort of his childhood home.

He is also fond of his hometown, Eastmouth, which he praises repeat...
