Physical setting

The story “A Scandal in Bohemia” by Arthur Conan Doyle takes place in London. The events take place in the Victorian era. The date is mentioned in the story: “the twentieth of March, 1888”.

The story begins at the apartment on Baker Street, where Sherlock Holmes lives, and where Watson used to live as well before getting married. This is where they receive the visit of the King of Bohemia who tells them about the case.

Other London landmarks which appear in the story are the Church of Santa Monica where Irene Adler marries Godfrey Norton, and Irene Adler’s residence at Briony Lodge. By naming these places specifically, the story is given a local color and made more realistic.
