Analysis

The analysis of the short story “A Scandal in Bohemia” by Arthur Conan Doyle shows that it follows a linear, chronological plot structure. It is a story within a story, as one of the characters is also the narrator, recounting a chain of events which occurred sometime in the past.

The main characters in the story are Sherlock Holmes and Irene Adler. The story is centered on the battle of wits between them. John Watson and the King of Bohemia are two other characters that are also central to the plot.

The physical setting is London, during the Victorian period. The social setting explores class issues and attitudes towards women.

The story is told by a first-person narrator who is also one of the characters. The narrator is reliable and detailed in his account.

The language in the narrative is formal. The language in the dialogue reveals the characters’ education and social status.
