Style of language

The short story “A Scandal in Bohemia” by Arthur Conan Doyle is written in a formal style of language. There are no contractions or slang terms, and the vocabulary is fairly complex and typical of the Victorian era. Examples of formal and advanced phrases that are used are “eclipses and predominates” and “barbaric opulence”. The advanced vocabulary is also present in the dialogue, which suggests that the characters are well-educated.

The language of the text includes rich descriptions which focus on auditory elements as well as visual ones. For example, when the King first arrives at the Baker Street residence, the narration describes his “slow and heavy step” and the “loud and authoritative” way he knocks on the door.
