Immigration

An important theme in the short story “I See You Never” by Ray Bradbury is immigration.

The attitudes people have towards immigrants are presented in the story through the reaction of the characters towards Mr. Ramirez. While Mrs. O’Brian seems to appreciate Mr. Ramirez, there seems to be some unconscious boundary in her mind when it comes to her immigrant tenant. Her mixed attitude towards Mr. Ramirez is illustrated by her “holding the door half open” (p. 109, ll. 10-11). The policemen feel superior to Mr. Ramirez. They taunt him with the words “ ‘That’s six months too long’ ” (p. 108, l. 68) about him overstaying his temporary visa. They smile when they witness his emo...
