Characters

The main characters in the short story “I See You Never” by Ray Bradbury are Mr. Ramirez, a Mexican immigrant who works in America, and Mrs. O’Brian, his landlady.

At the beginning of the story, Mr. Ramirez goes to Mrs. O’Brian to say goodbye to her, as he is forced to return to Mexico because his visa expired six months ago. Both characters seem to like and respect each other. They both come to realize that they will never see each other again, and the knowledge affects them.

The police officers who come to take Mr. Ramirez are also worth mentioning. Their attitude is mostly official and impassive, showing that they care only about doing their jobs and do not really see Mr. Ramirez as an individual. Their amusement at Mr. Ramirez’s emotional outburst and broken English suggests their prejudiced attitude.
