Dwadwa

In Sindiwe Magona’s novel Mother to Mother, Dwadwa is Mandisa’s current husband and Siziwe’s biological father. He works in the Docks in Cape Town and is a Methodist.

Mandisa describes him as a “solid, steadfast, predictable” (p. 161) man whom she needs in her life. Mandisa considers Dwadwa “a good provider” (p. 68) as he works hard and enables them to be one of the very few families in Guguletu who get to eat meat more than once a week. In this way, Dwadwa represents a steady partner for Mandisa, who has only had trouble in relationships up to that point. 

Mandisa also describes Dwadwa as a good father:
