Resistence

One of the significant themes discussed in Sindiwe Magona’s novel Mother to Mother is resistance. The novel shows the oppression people of color in South Africa have been subjected to by the white colonizers and leaders, but it also presents how they fought to resist and liberate themselves. 

Mandisa’s grandfather, Tatomkhulu, tells Mandisa about the way the Xhosa people rebelled against the white colonizers by killing all their cattle:
