Structure

The novel Mother to Mother by Sindiwe Magona follows a non-linear structure. The novel switches between different moments in time, showing them from different perspectives. The two main timelines the story follows are the day when Amy was murdered and Mandisa’s past, up until the birth of her third child.

The novel is divided into 12 chapters of varying lengths. Sometimes, the date, time, and location are mentioned in subheadings in order to make the disjointed narrative easier to follow, such as: “Gungululu – September 1972” (p.99). The novel also includes a preface by the author, which explains the historical incident that inspired the novel and gives a context to the events in the story.
