Motherhood

The title of the novel Mother to Mother by Sindiwe Magona reflects the theme of motherhood. 

Mandisa, the main character and narrator of the novel speaks directly to the mother of the young woman murdered by Mandisa’s son. The two women are linked through their shared role as mothers and through their children’s tragic encounter. Because of this, Mxolisi and Amy’s lives have been permanently changed, and the mothers are forced to cope with the consequences. Throughout the novel, Mandisa speaks to the other woman, mother to mother, to show her what Mxolisi’s life was like so that the mother can understand the circumstances that led him to commit the violence that took Amy’s life. Mandisa also appeals to the other mother to show that they are now in similar positions. ...
