Looking for Alaska by John Green became a success and has been translated into 15 languages. In 2006 it received its first award, the "Michael L. Printz Award for Excellence in Young Adults Literature". But although the novel received much praise, sales were initially slow.

It wasn't until 2012 that the book finally made it onto the bestseller lists. In addition, the novel became required reading in school in the U.S. and in Germany. Many other awards followed. In Germany, the novel was nominated for the German Youth Literature Award 2008 in the "Youth Book" and "Prize of the Youth Jury" categories. In justifying the nomination, they stressed that Green's story is "true to life," and it deals with important issues young people are faced with.
