Pathos

Throughout the talk, Eberhardt mostly appeals to pathos by sharing personal stories about her sons’ experiences with racial bias. For example, she discusses how her older son has learned to be friendly and polite to white people to put them at ease and stay safe from their racial biases which may lead to dangerous situations: 

When my eldest son was 16 years old, he discovered that when white people look at him, they feel fear. (…) When those doors close, people are trapped in this tiny space with someone they have been taught to associate with danger. My son senses their discomfort, and he smiles to put them at ease, to calm their fears. (ll. 90-93)

Through this anecdote, Eberhardt shows a personal example of how racial bias affects members of her own family. It can also be argued that this example helps her appeal to the audience’s love for their children, as it shows that racial bias promotes situations in which children often feel unsafe. 

Eberhardt also occasionally appeals to pathos by using words with strong negative meanings. For example, by using the words “horrific, fatal encounter” (l. 79) to describe the murder of George Floyd, Eberhardt appeals to the audience’s sadness and anger to show the deadly consequences racial bias can have.
