Summary and structure
Summary
Ian Goade is a primary school teacher who interferes when a boy, Campbell, is bullying another one. The teacher takes the boy by his ear and forces him to go to the headmistress’s office, Mrs Baynes. After school, the headmistress warns Ian about possible consequences of him physically coercing Campbell. Next week, Ian finds out the boy’s mother has filed an official complaint against him and wants the matter to be investigated. Ian tries – against the advice of the headmistress and Em (probably his partner) – to approach the mother, but he only makes matters worse. He discovers two angry parents who do not want to listen to him. Then, Ian tries to approach Campbell, again without any success. Lastly, he goes to talk to the headmistress, but he finds out that an official investigation is going to take place regardless of him resigning or not. The summer vacation passes, and Ian now waits for the first hearing.
