Structure

The short story “The Arrangers of Marriage” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie begins in media res, with the narrator describing her new husband’s apartment. The story has a linear structure as the main character, Chinaza, is being forced to get used to American customs. The beginning of the story already acts as a hint to the reader about what Chinaza and Ofodile’s marriage and lifestyle will look like: 

The number 2B, unevenly fashioned from yellowish metal, was plastered on it. (...) He had used the word ‘house’ when he told me about our home. I had imagined a smooth driveway snaking between cucumber-colored lawns, a door leading into a hallway, walls with sedate paintings. A house like those of the white newlyweds in the American films
