Summary

Raymond Carver’s short story “Gazebo” starts with Holly and Duane who are sitting on a sofa in a motel suite and drinking Teacher’s whiskey while having an argument. Moments before, Holly wanted to jump out of the window. Holly admits that her heart is broken, and she cannot handle her situation anymore.

Duane recalls how they ended up living in the motel. He remembers how they became managers and how financially stable they used to be. Holly was in charge of the financial aspects and the bookings. Duane used to take care of the repairs and cleaning while also having a night job. Then one day, Duane cheated on Holly with a Mexican maid named Juanita, who Holly hired herself.
