Holly

Outer characterization
 

Holly is an important character in Raymond Carver’s short story “Gazebo”. She is married to Duane and manages a motel with him. According to her, she married Duane when he was not quite young, but she had already been in a relationship before with a man called Wyatt.

Holly is over thirty years old. She is seen through Duane’s eyes. He considers her “attractive”. Duane also describes her “tall” with “long black hair and green eyes, the only green-eyed woman I've ever known”.

Holly deals with the financial aspects of the motel as well as interacting with the guests, which could suggest that she is better educated than Duane.
