Structure

Raymond Carver’s short story “Gazebo” uses a linear plot structure. The plot centers around the argument between the two main characters, Holly and Duane. It also focuses on Duane’s infidelity and how he cheated on Holly with Juanita.

The story starts in medias res while Holly and Duane are arguing:

That morning she pours Teacher's over my belly and licks it off. That afternoon she tries to jump out the window. 

I go, ‘Holly, this can't continue. This has got to stop.’ 

(...)

She goes, ‘Duane, this is killing me.’ 

We are drinking Teacher's with ice and water. 

This beginning is intriguing, and it makes the reader want to figure out what they are arguing about. It also gives insight into the relationship of the main characters and how they behave as individuals. ...
