Characters
The main characters in Raymond Carver’s short story “Gazebo” are Duane and Holly, a married couple working as managers at a motel. The story centers around their failed relationship.
Duane’s actions appear to have caused damage to his marriage to Holly. It should be noted, though, that Duane does not seem to regret cheating with Juanita and appears not to understand why Holly is bothered by the affair.
Holly seems hurt and frustrated by Duane’s betrayal. She realizes that their marriage is over, even though Duane tries to persuade her it is not true. At first, the unhappiness makes her act almost irrationally, but by the end of the story, she appears calm and resigned.
