Freedom and growing up
Freedom is the one of the main themes of the short story “Flight” by Doris Lessing. The story shows how important it is to Alice to be allowed the freedom to live her life as she wishes.
The story presents different attitudes towards freedom. Alice needs to get freedom from her family to be able to live and love the way she wants to. The grandfather views freedom as a bad thing, as he would not be able to observe every aspect of Alice’s life if she is married. At the same time he wishes for her to remain a child for longer, as he knows the hardships of the adult life. This ties together with the theme of growing up.
