Style of language
The story “Flight” by Doris Lessing is written using reader-friendly language. The narration uses standard spellings, without slang, or contractions. For example: “She was gazing past the pink flowers, past the railway cottage where they lived, along the road to the village.” (ll. 16-17)
At the beginning of the story the grandfather is presented as a happy individual who enjoys being around his pets. The author has chosen several positive words to describe him in that situation, some of these are: “sunlight” (l.2), “small rainbows” (l.2), “pretty” (l.6), “lightly on his chest” (ll.7-8). The use of these words suggests that the grandfather is happy and enjoying his time with the animals.
