Narrator and point of view

The story “Flight” by Doris Lessing is told by a 3rd person limited narrator, offering the readers access to the grandfather’s thoughts and feelings. The narrator remains the same throughout the story without any shifts. 

With this type of narrator, the reader can gain a deeper understanding of the feelings of the main character, as the grandfather is unable to let his granddaughter go, thinking that she is too young to get married. Although at first sight he might seem grumpy and irritable, deep down he feels hurt, abandoned and saddened by her inevitable transition into adulthood. The narrator offers a description of his feelings and emotions:

More than anything could, their grown-up seriousness shut him out, making him alone; also, it quietened...
