Alice

Alice is the granddaughter in the story “Flight” by Doris Lessing. She is described as a carefree, eighteen-year-old young woman, who is ready to take her next step in life and get married to the young man she is in love with. The author does not provide a detailed physical description of Alice: “Her hair fell down her back in a wave of sunlight; and her long bare legs repeated the angles of the frangipani stems, bare, shining brown stems among patterns of pale blossoms.” (ll. 13-15). This description is particularly important since it shows how her grandfather sees her: a fragile flower, easily breakable, someone who should be protected.
