Why we enjoy fantasy
When analyzing a work of fantasy, it might be useful to consider why we read or watch fantasy. We go into two potential reasons here.
Fantasy as escapism
Escapism means to seek distraction (= escape) from unpleasant realities. By losing yourself in a work of fantasy, you can forget about your own problems. For instance, if you are bullied in school, you might read Harry Potter and dream of being part of the warm Hogwarts community - or fantasize about casting a Stupefy spell on your bullies. It might not be real, but it can provide emotional and psychological relief all the same.
