Summary

This is a summary of “AWOL” by Deb Shoval. The short film tells the story of Joey, a young woman enrolled in the US Army. She visits her hometown during Christmas holidays, before her deployment to Afghanistan. During a family dinner, we realize that it was her mother who pushed her to join the forces and that Joey is not very happy about being in the army.

She visits a neighbor, Rayna, with whom she is having an affair. Rayna is older than Joey. She is also married and a mother of two. Joey proposes Rayna to run away together to Canada. At first, Rayna is reluctant, particularly because none of the women have money for their escape. However, she eventually agrees with Joey’s proposal.
