Focus on Joey

Question 2 in the exam set requires you to write a short analytical essay regarding “AWOL” by Deb Shoval with a focus on Joey’s character, including elements such as setting, framing, atmosphere and title.

As we have discussed in the Characterizations section of the study guide, Joey is the protagonist of the short movie.

She is a young lesbian woman visiting her hometown during Christmas holidays before her deployment in Afghanistan.
